Sama's Story

Sama is six years old and from Syria.

For four years, Sama had endured bullying because of the severe burns that had scarred her face and hands. Often withdrawn, she wore a constant expression of defiance, as if expecting someone to say something cruel whenever they approached. She often refused to speak or interact with anyone.

Sama and her family had been displaced many times. She suffered severe burns from a heater explosion during their displacement journey, adding even more pain and suffering to their already difficult ordeal.

Now, they live in a stone block, lacking even the most basic necessities, including food, water and heating. It became their only refuge after repeated displacement in search of safety.

Sama’s father suffers from a chronic illness caused by the war, which has left him unable to work or provide for his family, including Sama’s medical treatments, laser sessions, and costly injections. Her mother also suffers from several chronic illnesses that require ongoing care.

One of War Child's partner organisations swiftly intervened after fortunately meeting Sama and her family in the local community. They enrolled her in several psychological support sessions including one called "Self-Acceptance and Solving Peer Problems," along with individual and group sessions to help her engage with other children and cope with the pressures she faces.

She was also referred to a specialist organisation for laser sessions and injections, who coordinated with a local hospital where she received regular treatments. The family also received cash assistance for clothes and essential needs such as food, water, and heating.

The team also ensured the mother received support by enrolling her in several awareness sessions focused on neglect, its effects, handling bullying, and positive parenting - helping her better navigate her role as the cornerstone of the family.

Today, Sama is no longer the child she once was. Though she is still undergoing treatment, her smile has returned. She steps forward with confidence, knowing that her remaining burn scars are not an obstacle to success.

She has become friendly, gentle, and free from all signs of aggression, her once-tense brows now calm and relaxed, her dreams bigger than ever. She dreams of becoming a doctor, treating children with burns, and sharing her story to inspire other children who have gone through similar experiences.
