Where we work

Burundi

Burundi is one of the world’s poorest nations. The lasting impacts of 12-years of war and frequent natural disasters have left 1.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.

Burundi has endured decades of internal conflict, leading to mass displacement.

Many internally displaced people lack access to basic services, leaving them increasingly vulnerable to exploitation and gender-based violence.

Children under 15 make up the largest demographic in Burundi. 90% of them are at high risk of violence, exploitation, food insecurity, and inadequate access to support services.

Our work in Burundi

War Child started working with partners organisations in Burundi in 2008, before establishing our own programmes in 2011 across Bubanza, Bujumbura, Cibitoke, Makamba and Rumonge provinces. Today we focus on delivering mental health and psychosocial support, protection, education and youth empowerment interventions to children affected by conflict in Makamba.

Through our TeamUp programme War Child are:

  • Providing mental health support through play and movement-based activities and psychological first aid through our network of safe spaces.
  • Working with local communities and partners on evaluating and assessing the impact of TeamUp, to ensure the programme is meeting the needs of children affected by conflict.

We won’t stop until every child living through conflict is safe from harm.

But we can’t do it without you.

Donate to War Child today and help us be there for children in Burundi and other conflict zones around the world.
