Saeed and his father Salem live in Yemen, where years of conflict have left families in crisis and children at risk of exploitation and abuse.
When Saeed struggled in school, Salem felt an overwhelming mix of disappointment and frustration. Unsure of how to help, he imposed strict rules, hoping discipline would lead to improvement. But instead of motivating Saeed, it only pushed them further apart.
When War Child met Saeed and Salem
Following a particularly difficult meeting at Saeed’s school, Salem met a member of War Child’s Community-based Child Protection Committee who invited Salem to a session on positive parenting. Salem was sceptical at first, but something inside him urged him to give it a try.
As he listened to stories about understanding and kindness in parenting, Salem realised his approach wasn’t working. Saeed needed support, not criticism.
Over the following weeks Saeed’s behaviour improved, and he became more engaged in his studies, even starting to ask his teachers for help. The relationship between father and son grew stronger, now built on trust rather than fear.
These positive changes extended beyond school. Saeed’s confidence blossomed, and he began to face challenges with a smile. Salem learned to celebrate every small achievement. The lessons in positive parenting transformed their entire family dynamic.
Unlocking a generation with UK Aid Match
Thanks to donations from the UK public, and match funding from the UK government through UK Aid Match, we are working with parents and caregivers, like Salem, to ensure they have the resources and knowledge to support their children’s education, helping them to thrive for a brighter future with more choices:
- Over 450 parents have participated in our Positive Parenting sessions, learning new strategies to connect with their children and improve behaviour and school performance. Since attending, 80% of parents have seen positive changes at home.
- Parents and caregivers are committed to sending their children to school, and attendance and participation has improved for supported children.
- 24 community-based child protection committee members have received training to help them assist more families, reducing harmful coping strategies and creating a safer environment for children.
Thank you to everyone who donated to our Unlock A Generation appeal, and to UK Aid Match.
With your support, War Child and our partners in Yemen are expanding access to employment, education, and child protection, empowering local communities to strengthen long-term resilience. This enables them to better safeguard their children, keep them in school, and help them reach their full potential.
