World Refugee Week

In the last 10 years, the number of people who were forcibly displaced from their homes due to persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations has nearly tripled.

Home can be a place of refuge, a feeling, or a state of mind.
Sometimes, we can find home in a single person. 
Other times, it’s in a whole community. Often, it’s a simple gesture of care and welcome.
Home can be more than one place, and finding it can be a journey - as it is for so many people who have to leave their countries and rebuild their lives. 

By the end of 2023, 117.3 million people were displaced, of which 68.3 million are internally displaced and 37.6 million are refugees. An estimated 47 million (40%) are children below 18 years of age.

Make a donation

Children around the world have had to become refugees due to the plight of war. They now have nowhere to go, nowhere to live and no families to keep the safe. Please donate and support vulnerable children who have had to flee their homes for their lives.

Our work with refugees 

War Child helps children and families find a sense of belonging and home in countries worldwide, including South Sudan, which hosts approximately 330,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, primarily from Sudan.

When War Child first meets children and their families, they are often struggling with their mental health, having been traumatised by conflict and displacement. Many children are forced to leave home without their families in search of work, making them especially vulnerable.

Most flee with nothing, not even documentation, making it difficult to access government services in their host country. This, combined with a lack of income, means access to health care is limited and children are unable to continue their education.

Using our digital learning application, Can't Wait To Learn, our programme supports children in gaining recognised qualifications by playing educational games on tablet devices, allowing children to continue their education no matter where they are.  This initiative combines mental health support, child protection, and education to help children regain trust in themselves and others.


By collaborating with local partner organisations on the ground, we are extending this support to many more vulnerable and remote children across South Sudan, helping them find a new sense of home.
